Depends what kind of battery, but in general, a battery will get warm during a rapid discharge of its potential, possibly by connecting both ends together. This is also known as shorting out the battery. BE CAREFUL!! some batteries can get very hot and dangerous. A car battery will give off hydrogen gas which will explode if there is a spark when you disconnect. Lots of people have been blown up by accident in this way.
